    German cockroaches: the indoor breeding specialist

    German cockroaches are the species that produces the classic infestation, and they are difficult for one reason above all others: reproductive speed. A female carries an egg capsule of 30 to 40 eggs attached to her abdomen until it is nearly ready to hatch, which means the eggs stay in the safest part of the harbourage right up to the last day.     What a nymph actually looks like at each stage

    German cockroach nymphs pass through six or seven moults before adulthood, and their appearance changes noticeably as they go. The earliest stage is roughly two to three millimetres, almost black, and looks more like a fast-moving speck of dirt than an insect. By the middle stages they are five to eight millimetres, dark brown, and the two characteristic parallel stripes on the shield behind the head become visible. Late-stage nymphs reach around ten millimetres, take on the lighter tan colour of an adult, and have obvious wing pads that do not yet extend over the abdomen. No nymph at any stage can fly.

    Why finding a nymph is more significant than finding an adult

    A single adult can be a hitchhiker. It arrived in a bag, a box or a delivery and it may have nowhere to go.
