A roach in the shower at 6 a.m., or one sitting in the kitchen sink like it owns the place, produces a very specific horror: they’re coming up the pipes. Sometimes that’s exactly true. More often the drain is innocent and the plumbing wall is guilty — and the two problems have different fixes. Getting the diagnosis right takes about five minutes and saves you from pouring useless (and pipe-damaging) product down a drain for a month.
The species tells you the story. Large roaches — an inch or more, reddish-brown, sometimes flying at you in a way that feels personal — are usually American cockroaches, the classic “sewer roach.” They genuinely do live in sewers, storm drains, and basements, and they arrive in homes as individual explorers, often through dry drain traps, floor drains, or basement gaps. Their presence usually means a route, not a resident colony in your kitchen.
Small roaches — half an inch, tan to brown, fast — are German roaches, and here’s the plot twist: German roaches don’t live in sewers. If small roaches cluster around your sink or shower, they’re living in the warm, humid voids around the plumbing — the cabinet under the sink, the vanity plumbing wall, the gap where pipes penetrate — and using the drain area for water. That’s an infestation of the room, wearing a drain costume.
Every drain in your home has a water-filled U-bend (the trap) whose whole job is to seal the pipe — against sewer gas, and incidentally against roaches. A trap full of water is a wall an American roach essentially can’t swim. The failure mode is dryness: a guest-bathroom shower unused for a month, a floor drain in the basement or laundry, a washing-machine standpipe — the water evaporates, the seal opens, and the pipe becomes a corridor. The other genuine pipe-adjacent route isn’t inside the pipe at all: it’s the crescent-shaped gap around the pipe where it passes through the wall or floor. That gap connects your kitchen to the wall void, the wall void to the basement — and in apartment buildings, unit to unit along the pipe chase (how roaches travel shared walls).
One: run water for thirty seconds in every drain you don’t use weekly — spare bathrooms, basement floor drains, laundry standpipes — and calendar a monthly repeat. Restoring trap seals is free and closes the main true-drain route. Two: after the evening’s last use, cover kitchen and bathroom drains overnight — a flat drain cover or even an inverted cup over the plug hole. If roach sightings stop when drains are covered, you’ve confirmed the route. Three: flashlight-inspect the pipe penetrations under the kitchen sink and bathroom vanity; pack any gap around the pipes with steel wool and seal over it. Four: fix the drips — a slowly dripping trap under the sink is a water fountain for every roach in the wall.
Whatever you do, don’t treat the inside of the pipe. Pesticide poured into a drain washes away with the next use (accomplishing nothing), can damage seals, and sends product straight into the wastewater system where it does harm without touching the colony. Boiling water occasionally flushes an explorer, but it doesn’t fix the route, and repeated boiling-water treatment is hard on PVC joints. The drain is not the battlefield; the seals and the surrounding voids are.
Once the routes are closed, treat the real estate the roaches actually occupy: the dry voids around the plumbing. If you want certainty instead of a theory, one week of cheap checks settles which route your roaches are using. Days one and two: restore every trap seal (run water in all unused drains) and photograph the pipe penetrations under sinks before sealing anything — that’s your before-picture. Nights one through three: cover the kitchen and bathroom drains after last use. Days three and four: sticky traps down in the under-sink cabinets, at the vanity wall, and near any floor drain, plus one flashlight pass two hours after lights-out. Day seven: read the evidence.
The readings are clean. Sightings stopped as soon as drains were covered, and traps near the drains are empty: it was a true drain route — keep the monthly water-refresh habit and the overnight covers for a few weeks while you seal, and you’re done.
