A harbourage tells you roughly how long the population has been established, roughly how large it is, and whether it is currently active. Four categories of evidence do the work, and you can read all of them with a torch and a few minutes.

    • Droppings. For German cockroaches these look like coarse ground pepper or dark specks, often concentrated in corners and along the underside of shelves. Volume indicates population size; freshness indicates activity.
    • Smear marks. Dark irregular streaks in damp areas, produced where insects run repeatedly along the same route. These map the travel corridors, which is where placements belong.
    • Shed skins. Pale, translucent, hollow versions of the insect. Their presence proves breeding on site, because only nymphs moult.
    • Egg cases. Small, ridged, brown capsules roughly eight millimetres long, often glued into a tight corner or crevice. An empty case with a split seam has already hatched; an intact case has not.
